Elliot Scientific Adds Lasers from Vescent Photonics

HARPENDEN, England, June 3, 2013 — Elliot Scientific Ltd. is boosting cold atom science in the UK by offering laser products from Denver-based Vescent Photonics, the company announced Monday.

Elliot Scientific said it will now offer Vescent's narrow-linewidth CW lasers, and electro-optic and optical accessory modules in the UK and Ireland. The company's lasers are used in research areas such as magneto-optical traps for laser cooling atoms, coherent atom sources, sensors for gravitometry and magnetometry, focused ion beams, ultrasensitive trace-isotope analysis, and quantum computing and cryptography.

Vescent's CW lasers are constructed without moving parts or piezos, and with very short laser cavities, the company said. This unique combination provides the lasers with a large mode-hop-free tuning range and immunity to vibration.

Also, unlike conventional external-cavity diode lasers, Vescent lasers can be injection current tuned over many gigahertz, enabling high-speed-frequency agility and very fast servo control for locking.

Vescent's optical and electro-optical modules are used in applications including spectroscopy, heterodyning, laser scanning and combined pulsing, intensity control and optical shuttering.

Glossary
heterodyning
In optical communications, the translation of optical signals into radio signals, lowering their frequency in detection from greater than 1014 Hz to less than 1010 Hz, so that further signal processing can be done with conventional circuitry, yielding improved receiver sensitivity and selectivity.
laser scanning
Laser scanning is a technology used to create precise digital representations of physical objects or environments by capturing their surface geometry and appearance. It involves directing a laser beam over the object or scene and measuring the distance to points on the surface by analyzing the time it takes for the laser pulses to return to the scanner. The process typically involves the following steps: Laser emission: A laser scanner emits a laser beam directed towards the object or...
