Zecotek Completes Green Fiber Laser Development, Files for Patent

Biophotonics technology developer Zecotek Medical Systems Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, announced yesterday that it has completed the creation of a fiber laser that operates in all known wavelengths of the green spectral range and has filed for a patent on the technology with the US Patent Office. Limited production will begin immediately, Zecotek said, with large-scale manufacture expected to begin in January 2008. Fiber lasers are more power-efficient, more compact, require less time to service, interface more easily with optical fiber channels, and deliver higher power with a high-quality beam than existing solid-state lasers, the company said. Applications for the green fiber laser series include replacement of existing ion gas and DPSS (diode-pumped solid-state) lasers used in both industrial and scientific applications. Zecotek said it is talking with potential customers in industries ranging from bioinstrumentation (DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, scanning laser microscopy); medicine (ophthalmology, dermatology, urology), printing and imaging; material processing (laser writing, lithography and sintering); and fundamental research (spectroscopy, fluorescent analysis).

Glossary
lithography
Lithography is a key process used in microfabrication and semiconductor manufacturing to create intricate patterns on the surface of substrates, typically silicon wafers. It involves the transfer of a desired pattern onto a photosensitive material called a resist, which is coated onto the substrate. The resist is then selectively exposed to light or other radiation using a mask or reticle that contains the pattern of interest. The lithography process can be broadly categorized into several...
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
spectral
Pertaining to or as a function of wavelength. Spectral quantities are evaluated at a single wavelength.
wavelength
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
