OLYMPIA, London, Dec. 22 -- About 2000 visitors representing academia, industry and government and international research teams glimpsed the latest life science products and technologies at the third annual Automation Europe 2004, held last month at London's Olympia. The affiliated Lab Automation Europe conference focused on new automation processes in drug discovery, showcasing innovative robotic technology; topics included compound synthesis and protein and cell analysis.

More than 100 vendors exhibited products, including 15 new products, at the two-day event, which also featured vendor seminars and poster presentations. Exhibitors reported an enthusiastic audience. Chay Keogh of Nikon UK Instruments said, "Our stand was never without a visitor. We were astonished at the sheer quality of interest in our equipment; we often had to fight visitors off our laser microdissection microscope."
Vicky Strzelczyk, laboratory manager at The Institute of Cancer Research, a college of the University of London, was the recipient of a £2000 Science in Practice awarded at the exhibition.
IIR Exhibitions Director Paula Lorimer said a third of the exhibition space has already been rebooked for next year, and that the organizers hope to increase microscopy/imaging exhibitors. International Biotech and Lab Automation Europe 2005 will be held Nov. 15-16 at Olympia, London.
