Thompson Group Acquires AIT

The Thompson Group announced Tuesday that it has acquired process analytical instruments maker Applied Instrument Technologies (AIT) of Pomona, Calif., for an undisclosed amount.

AIT, a Hamilton Sundstrand Corp. business, will be organized as a standalone company within The Thompson Group. AIT manufactures process analytical instruments, including Fourier transform infrared analyzers, near-infrared analyzers, mass spectrometers, process gas spectrographs and Raman analyzers used in the refining, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical and steel industries to optimize their production processes.

Thompson said AIT will continue to be co-located within Hamilton Sundstrand's Pomona facility through the remainder of the year as it transitions to a nearby new facility; AIT expects to move into its new facility in early 2011.

"With a diverse array of engineering, scientific, manufacturing and test capabilities, AIT looks forward to expanding its ability to provide unique applications and products to our customers."said Joe LaConte, AIT president.

Based in Kalispell, the Thompson Group was founded by Raymon F. Thompson, an entrepreneur in the semiconductor industry and the recent controlling shareholder in a $375 million equipment manufacturer.

Glossary
analyzer
An optical device, such as a Nicol prism, capable of producing plane-polarized light, and used for detecting the effect of the object on plane-polarized light produced by the polarizer.
fourier transform
Any of the various methods of decomposing a signal into a set of coefficients of orthogonal waveforms (trigonometric functions).
infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
mass spectrometer
A device used to measure the masses and relative concentrations of atoms and molecules. It utilizes the Lorentz force generated by external magnetic field on a moving charged particle, in which the particles are deflected by the magnetic field according to their masses. Once deflected, the particles are detected and recorded electrically to provide a mass spectrum of the input beam of ions.
near-infrared
The shortest wavelengths of the infrared region, nominally 0.75 to 3 µm.
