Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. of Hemel Hempstead, UK, has announced that it will provide the Scottish Metabolomics Facility (ScotMet), located at the University of Glasgow, with technology to advance the field of metabolomics. Funded by the Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance, ScotMet is run jointly by the universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. It will install four of the company’s mass spectrometers, including an LTQ Orbitrap Velos with electron transfer dissociation and high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility source, a DSQ-II gas chromatography/mass spectrometer and two Exactive liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer benchtop instruments.

Glossary
mass spectrometer
A device used to measure the masses and relative concentrations of atoms and molecules. It utilizes the Lorentz force generated by external magnetic field on a moving charged particle, in which the particles are deflected by the magnetic field according to their masses. Once deflected, the particles are detected and recorded electrically to provide a mass spectrum of the input beam of ions.
