Tellabs to Drop Optical Switch Line

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Nov. 6 -- Tellabs Inc. said it will drop a core optical switch product to focus efforts on a switch for the still-growing metropolitan market. The company said it will discontinue the Titan 6700 core optical switch, redeploying employees and resources to the development of the Titan 6100 metro dense wavelength-division multiplexing switch. It said technology from the 6700 system, including wavelength management, will be adapted for use in the 6100 system.

"This is the first step in our plan to reinvent Tellabs in order to renew our growth and adjust to the new realities of the communications market," Tellabs president and CEO Richard Notebaert said in a statement. He said the company will concentrate its resources in the metro optical networking and business service markets, where there is still growth in demand.
