PEABODY, Mass., March 26 -- Technical Manufacturing Corp. (TMC) has completed an order for its CleanTop II Steel Honeycomb optical tops from the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF) program. The order for 504 optical tops is perhaps the largest single order ever for such tops, TMC said.
The stadium-sized NIF is an inertial confinement fusion research facility; its primary mission is to help ensure the safety and reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. The TMC tops -- all nearly eight feet long -- are an integral part of the preamplifier beam transport systems, which focus 192 giant laser beams onto a target the size of a pinhead, subjecting it to the same temperatures and pressures found in the core of a star.
TMC delivered the optical tops in deliveries over several months.
TMC designs and manufactures precision vibration isolation systems and optical tables for precision manufacturing processes and research applications around the world, such as semiconductor manufacturing, telecom, microbiology, optics, metrology and academic, industrial and military research projects.
