Synova Opens Micromachining Center in Korea, Receives Orders

Synova SA of Lausanne, Switzerland, a supplier of laser solutions for the semiconductor, electronics, flat-panel display and industrial micromachining industries, will increase its presence in Korea by opening a new micromachining center (MMC) in Seoul. The MMC, scheduled to open in March, will serve as a competence center for demonstration, sample testing and application development. Synova previously opened centers in the Silicon Valley, Boston, Taiwan and Japan. The company also announced tool orders from a Korean organic LED (OLED) manufacturer and a US-based semiconductor manufacturer's Korean facility. The first order was for Synova's laser stenciling system for OLED mask manufacturing and the second for its laser grinding system for thin-wafer edge grinding. The orders will replace traditional cutting and grinding methods used in each of the manufacturers' respective processes.

Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
