SPIE Elects 2004 Officers and Directors

BELLINGHAM, Wa., Jan. 14 -- James Bilbro, assistant director and chief technician for optics at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) NASA, was elected 2004 president of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the association announced this week.

Malgorzata Kujawinska was elected 2004 vice president of SPIE. Kujawinska is a professor of applied optics at the Department of Mechatronics, Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), where she is also head of the optical engineering division at the Institute of Micromechanics and Photonic. Paul F. McManamon, a senior scientist, infrared sensors, for the Air Force Research Laboratory, was elected secretary, and Robert E. Fischer, president and CEO of OPTICS 1 Inc., was elected treasurer.

2004-2006 SPIE directors are: Ralph B. James, associate laboratory director for the Energy, Environment and National Security Directorate, Brookhaven National Laboratory; Gloria Putnam, engineering manager at Eastman Kodak Co., Image Sensors; Bruce J. Tromberg, a professor at the University of California, Irvine; and Ichirou Yamaguchi, professor of engineering at Gunma University, Japan. Guillermo H. Kaufmann, a physics professor at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina, was appointed a director for the 2004 term.
