Resolve Optics Designs Relay Lens for High-Speed Range Camera

Resolve Optics Ltd., a UK maker of lens systems and optical designs, announced it was selected by Specialised Imaging Ltd. of Tring, England, to design a novel relay lens to optimize the quality of image transfer from the intensifier to the image sensor of its SIR2 high-speed range camera. "Traditionally, most range camera designs have used two off-the-shelf lenses placed back-to-back to transfer images from the intensifier to the image sensor," Resolve Optics said in a statement. "However, this approach typically has produced a large amount of shading and image distortion." The company said it designed a relay lens that was both compact and that eliminated the shading and distortion effects that degrade the quality of transferred images. The resultant novel f/2.8, 1 to 1.1-magnification relay lens has enabled the SIR2 range camera to produce images with no visible distortion that are equally illuminated across the entire image area, it said. The compact relay lens also ensured optimal input into the microlenses on the SIR2 CCD image sensor that cut off light at angles greater than 12°. Specialised Imaging Ltd. makes imaging systems and components for industrial, military and scientific applications. The company recently launched the SIR2, a high-performance, high-speed camera that offers true double imaging capability enabling valuable information on displacement and velocity to be gained from ballistics, detonics and impact studies.
