Remote Sensing Program Open for Submissions

BOULDER, Colo., May 4, 2012 — ASD Inc. announced that submissions for the seventh annual Alexander Goetz Instrument Support Program are now being accepted. Student researchers from all disciplines in remote sensing and field spectroscopy are encouraged to register.

The award is named for ASD Inc. co-founder and chief scientist Dr. Alexander Goetz, a pioneer in the fields of remote sensing and imaging spectrometry, who played a critical role in developing portable instrumentation for field spectroscopy research applications.

A maximum of 10 recipients will be selected for their novel, unconventional and/or fundamental research efforts in the field of remote sensing. The program is designed to further encourage a creative research environment within the remote sensing and field spectroscopy community worldwide. Proposals for the 2013 program are due by Oct. 15.

Winners of the program will be offered use of ASD’s FieldSpec 4 standard resolution or FieldSpec HandHeld 2 spectroradiometers for remote sensing. ASD recently announced the FieldSpec 4 line of spectroradiometers for field spectroscopy with improved speed, performance and portability over previous models.

“I am honored to be part of such a wonderful program that recognizes the strong commitment of students pursuing their passions in reflectance spectroscopy research applications,” Goetz said. “By incorporating our latest remote sensing instruments into the instrument program, we give future remote sensing leaders access to tools crucial for conducting their creative research applications.”

All submissions will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee chaired by Goetz, and winners will be announced in early December.

photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
remote sensing
Remote sensing is a method of data collection and observation where information about objects, areas, or phenomena on Earth's surface is gathered from a distance, typically using sensors onboard satellites, aircraft, drones, or other platforms. This technique enables the monitoring and analysis of Earth's surface and atmosphere without direct physical contact. Remote sensing systems capture electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light, infrared, microwave, or radio waves) reflected or...
