ZEISS Reaches Major Milestones in Vision Correction

JENA, Germany, Oct. 29, 2018 — The Medical Technology Business Group of ZEISS has announced the recent completion of 1.5 million treatments with its SMILE technology and the production of its one-thousandth VisuMax femtosecond laser. SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, uses a femtosecond laser system with high precision and speed to reshape the cornea. The laser creates a small lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue, known as lenticule, inside the cornea. The surgeon then removes the lenticule through a small incision at the front part of the eye.
