Using the Modulation Transfer Function on the Factory Floor

Production modulation transfer function instrumentation is a major departure from traditional lab equipment.

Samuel P. Sadoulet, Edmund Optics

Although resolution has historically been a dominant parameter of image quality, it is clear that contrast also plays an instrumental role, particularly in terms of the speed and accuracy of machine vision systems. It should be noted that resolution and contrast are inherently linked; specifying the limiting resolution of an imaging system without a notion of contrast makes little sense. The modulation transfer function is an elegant way to characterize how well an imaging system transfers contrast as a function of object detail; i.e., resolution. As the object details get smaller, it...Read full article

    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    modulation transfer function
Also called sine wave response and contrast transfer function. The modulation transfer function is the ratio of the modulation in the image to the modulation in the object as a function of frequency (cycles per unit length) of the sinusoidal wave pattern that describes both the object and image. A plot of the MTF against frequency is an almost universal measure of the performance of an image-forming optical system as it provides a measurement of the ability of an optical system to reproduce...
