Ultrashort-Pulse QCLs Push Possibilities into Mid-Infrared

Researchers at ETH Zurich have demonstrated direct femtosecond pulse emission from a QCL in the mid-infrared region. The demonstration, which the ETH Zurich researchers reported is the first of its kind, opens the possibility for novel applications of ultrashort laser pulses. The team was led by Ph.D. student Philipp Taschler and colleagues in the research group of ETH Zurich professor Jerome Faist, who was part of the team that introduced the QCL in 1994 while at Bell Laboratories. Quantum cascade lasers, a type of semiconductor laser, support numerous applications in the...Read full article

    quantum cascade laser
A quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a type of semiconductor laser that operates based on the principles of quantum mechanics. It is a versatile and powerful device used for emitting coherent light in the mid-infrared to terahertz range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Quantum cascade lasers were first proposed by Federico Capasso, Jerome Faist, Deborah Sivco, Carlo Sirtori, Albert Hutchinson, and Alfred Cho in 1994. Key features and principles of quantum cascade lasers: Quantum cascade...
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    femtosecond laser
A femtosecond laser is a type of laser that emits ultrashort pulses of light with durations on the order of femtoseconds, where one femtosecond is equal to 10-15 seconds. These lasers are capable of generating extremely high peak powers and are widely used in various scientific, medical, industrial, and technological applications due to their unique properties. femtosecond laser suppliers → Key features and characteristics of femtosecond lasers include: Ultrashort pulse...
