What is air? Scientists worldwide continue to focus their attention and their instruments on answering that simple question with an ever-increasing standard for accuracy. It is no longer sufficient to know that air is composed mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. We need to know in detail about all the trace gases found in the air, the tens of parts per billion of ammonia, the several parts per million of methane and the 370 ppm of carbon dioxide.
