Thorlabs Adds Imaging Cytometry with Acquisition

NEWTON, N.J., and WESTWOOD, Mass., Oct. 13, 2013 — Photonics products maker Thorlabs’ acquisition of CompuCyte Corp. will add an essential imaging complement to traditional flow cytometry techniques, the company said this week. Founded by Dr. Louis Kamentsky, Westwood-based CompuCyte developed laser-scanning cytometry products for high-content cellular and tissue-based analysis. The technology combines the advantages of digital microscopy, image processing and cytometry to deliver an unprecedented depth of high-content analysis of adherent cells and tissue specimens, the company said. The instrumentation is used in life science...Read full article

    flow cytometry
Flow cytometry is a powerful technique used in biology and medicine for the quantitative analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and particles suspended in a fluid. The method allows for the rapid measurement of multiple parameters simultaneously on a cell-by-cell basis. It is widely used in various fields, including immunology, microbiology, hematology, and cancer research. Here are the key components and features of flow cytometry: Sample preparation: Cells or...
    laser scanning
Laser scanning is a technology used to create precise digital representations of physical objects or environments by capturing their surface geometry and appearance. It involves directing a laser beam over the object or scene and measuring the distance to points on the surface by analyzing the time it takes for the laser pulses to return to the scanner. The process typically involves the following steps: Laser emission: A laser scanner emits a laser beam directed towards the object or...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
