Thales and Alcatel, both European companies with worldwide operations, have created a joint research laboratory for semiconductor technologies with applications in telecommunications, defense, space and security. The purpose of the Alcatel-Thales III-V Lab, with sites in Marcoussis and Palaiseau, both in France, is to strengthen the companies' expertise in opto- and microelectronic components based on III-V technologies. The primary fields of research at the facility are components for optical fiber transmission, infrared imaging detectors, high-power laser diodes, and GaN-based, high-frequency, high-power transistors and circuits. Among the main objectives are to develop technologies, anticipate scientific and technological advances, and establish scientific and industrial partnerships. A consortium held by both companies will manage the laboratory.
