Terahertz Light Experiments Herald Downsized Particle Accelerators

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 25, 2022 — Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) investigating how to produce and use terahertz (THz) light to enable particle accelerators developed an electro-optical sampling technique that measures THz wavelengths while at the same time maintaining the correlation between position and time in the THz pulses. The technology could provide a path to reducing the immense size of particle accelerator facilities. The proton accelerator at the Spallation Neutron Source, a Department of Energy user facility located at ORNL, is the length of three football fields. With...Read full article

    Glossary
    particle acceleration
Particle acceleration refers to the process by which charged particles, such as electrons or protons, gain kinetic energy and increase their velocity. This acceleration can occur in various natural or artificial environments and is a fundamental concept in physics, particularly in the study of subatomic particles, astrophysics, and accelerator physics. Key points about particle acceleration: Natural processes: Particle acceleration occurs in natural phenomena such as cosmic rays, where...
    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
    electro-optics
    1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material; 2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light. Compare with optoelectronics.
