STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 15 -- The first results from the Swedish one-meter solar telescope on the Canary Island of La Palma were published in Nature this week and are described as a breakthrough in observational solar physics. Researchers at the Institute for Solar Physics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which runs the telescope, said it has captured the most detailed images ever of the solar surface, including previously unknown features of sunspots such as the unexpected discovery of "dark cores within bright penumbral filaments."
