SALEM, N.H., Jan. 23 -- StockerYale Inc. announced today that it has received its largest erbium-doped fiber order to date from one of its premiere distributors in Asia. The fiber will be used by major manufacturers of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers in the region. Erbium-doped fiber is a critical subcomponent used to manufacture erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Paul Jortberg, senior vice president of sales and marketing for optical components, said, "Asian telecom carriers are focusing their network development and deployment strategies on access networks, and the CATV (cable television) companies are continuing to build out their fiber networks. Consequently, there are a number of Asian manufacturing companies that are currently developing and manufacturing EDFAs for both the telecom and CATV industries. There has also been an influx of large US and European companies shifting production operations into the region because of lower manufacturing costs. Jortberg added, "China is now recognized as having the world's fastest growing optical telecommunications market. With the company's distributor channel firmly in place within the Pacific Rim region and its expanding portfolio of specialty optical fibers, StockerYale is well positioned to take advantage of the regional proliferation of optical component manufacturing."
