SpatiaLight Inc. of Novato and Foreal Spectrum Inc. of San Jose, both in California, have entered into an agreement to develop and market a liquid-crystal-on-silicon optical light engine for use in rear projection televisions and other projection applications. The light engines will employ 1920 × 1080-pixel imagers from the former company and LED light sources from the latter. This could allow the creation of thinner televisions with increased color uniformity as well as lower heat output and energy consumption.
