'Spaser' Nanolaser Realized

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Aug. 17, 2009 – Nanophotonic circuitry just got a big boost thanks to the creation of the world’s tiniest laser – the “spaser.” This device is the first of its kind to emit visible light and it represents a critical component for possible future technologies, including superfast computers that use light instead of electrons to process information, advanced sensors and imaging. According to Vladimir Shalaev, the Robert and Anne Burnett professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University, the spaser is a keycomponent for nanophotonic-based technologies and nanophotonic circuitry. Such...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    spaser
A spaser (surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a nanoscale device that generates coherent optical radiation at nanometer-scale dimensions. It is analogous to a laser but operates on the principles of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) rather than traditional optical gain mechanisms. Surface plasmons: Surface plasmons are collective oscillations of free electrons at the interface between a metal and a dielectric material, typically occurring when light...
