Sony has once again decided to break ranks with competing electronics companies by leading an effort to develop standards for digital video discs. More than a decade ago, the company failed in its effort to establish its Betamax videocassette recorder standards. Once again Sony is taking on its competitors by developing a disc with 3 GB per side. A 10-company consortium led by Matsushita has begun developing 2.6-GB discs.
