Scientists Use Electrochemistry to Tune Nonlinear Optical Properties of Nanotubes

MOSCOW, Oct. 24, 2019 — An international team led by researchers from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) has shown that the nonlinear optical response of carbon nanotubes — specifically, saturable absorption — can be controlled by electrochemical gating. The researchers applied their discovery to the design of a device for controlling laser pulse duration. Saturable absorption is a nonlinear optical effect where the absorption coefficient decreases with the increasing power of incident light. Thus, the material becomes more transparent under intense laser radiation....Read full article

    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
    medical lasers
Medical lasers are devices that produce intense beams of light with specific characteristics and properties, which are used for various medical applications. These lasers emit light in the form of coherent and focused beams, allowing precise control over the energy delivered to tissues. The term "laser" stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." In the medical field, lasers are employed for diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical purposes. Their applications...
