Schott AG, an international technology company with headquarters in Mainz, Germany, is investing $80 million in the construction of its second thin-film transistor melting tank in Jena, Germany. The expansion, which will begin this month, will double the company’s melting capacity. In addition, the company has entered into a joint venture with Kuramoto Seisakusho Co. Ltd. of Miyagi, Japan, to form Schott Kuramoto Processing Korea Co. Ltd. in Ochang, South Korea, for the production of flat panel displays. The German company will hold 75 percent of the shares and contribute large-format glass substrates. The Japanese company, owning 25 percent, will supply processing expertise. Production will begin at the end of the year.
