Rockwell Automation Inc. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Clearpath Robotics Inc., an Ontario-based developer of autonomous robotics for industrial applications. Beyond helping to expand Rockwell’s portfolio in autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), the move bolsters its software-based services, particularly with the addition of Clearpath’s OTTO Motors division, Rockwell said, as the division offers fleet management and navigation software in addition to AMRs. Further, combined with Rockwell’s continuing partnerships in fixed robotic arms, solutions for independent cart technology, and leadership in programmable logic controllers, the addition of OTTO Motors’ AMR capabilities will create a complete portfolio of advanced material handling solutions, Rockwell said. According to Interact Analysis, the market for AMRs in manufacturing is expected to grow about 30% per year over the next five years, with an estimated market size of $6.2 billion by 2027. Upon completion of the acquisition, Clearpath will report to Rockwell’s Intelligent Devices operating segment.
