Research Team Incorporates Photonics into Radar System

SYDNEY, Feb. 15, 2022 — A photonic radar system, characterized by its developers as so sensitive that it can detect an object’s location, speed, and angle down to the millimeter level, could be used for applications including autopilot assistance, gesture identification, environmental sensing, and medical imaging. Researchers at the University of Sydney developed the photonic wideband stepped-frequency (P-WSF) radar system. Tests showed that the system successfully handled a broad range of frequencies without requiring high-speed electronics. The use of photonics enabled the system to generate...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
