Applying Ancient Technologies to Modern Photonics

Jamie Knapp, Newport Corp. – Corion Optical Filters

One source rarely considered when addressing photonics issues is our ancestors: Great technological discoveries from many millennia ago may lead to modern day solutions. A recent example of this involves optimizing gold-based infrared reflectors commonly employed for defense and aerospace instrumentation, imaging optics and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (environmental monitoring).1 In the latter case, light is transmitted through the volume of air to be analyzed. The light is reflected – via gold retroreflector arrays – back into appropriate analysis instrumentation, where...Read full article

    Glossary
    infrared reflector
An optical component coated to reflect infrared radiation. Gold, silver and aluminum are typical coating materials.
    reflectivity
The ratio of the intensity of the total radiation reflected from a surface to the total incident on that surface.
    silicon monoxide
A material used as a protective layer on an aluminized or silvered mirror. It is evaporated on the mirror as a thin layer, and after exposure to the air the monoxide tends to become silicon dioxide or quartz, which is very hard and perfectly transparent.
    spectrophotometer
A spectrophotometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the intensity of light at various wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the visible and ultraviolet regions. It is commonly employed in various fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science for a wide range of applications, including chemical analysis, color measurement, and concentration determination of substances in a solution. Spectrophotometers operate by passing a beam of light...
    zinc sulfide
A polycrystalline material that transmits in the infrared; it is used as a phosphor in x-ray and television screens.
