Raytheon Acquisition Approved

WASHINGTON -- US Justice Department officials have approved Raytheon Co.'s $9.5 billion acquisition of Hughes Electronics Corp. The acquisition makes the Lexington, Mass., company the nation's third-largest defense contractor. The deal went through after Raytheon agreed to sell off some electronic vision technology that guides missiles to their targets, because of Justice Department fears that the Hughes acquisition might have given the company a near monopoly on the technology, agency officials confirmed.
