Researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) have successfully demonstrated holographic Raman microscopy. The technology is poised to support wide-ranging applications, from live cell and tissue interrogation to, potentially, anti-counterfeiting. Because spontaneous Raman scattering is more than 10 orders of magnitude weaker than fluorescence, the technique is rarely employed. However, Raman can be enhanced dramatically on metal surfaces or in metallic nanogaps to surpass fluorescence response; probes of nanometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), therefore, are...Read full article

    holography
Holography is a technique used to capture and reconstruct three-dimensional images using the principles of interference and diffraction of light. Unlike conventional photography, which records only the intensity of light, holography records both the intensity and phase information of light waves scattered from an object. This allows the faithful reproduction of the object's three-dimensional structure, including its depth, shape, and texture. The process of holography typically involves the...
    shearing interferometer
An interferometer in which interference is produced between wavefronts that are sheared in the sample object by a small lateral distance.
