Purdue Developes 'Tornado' Lab-on-a-Chip with Nanotweezers

Purdue University researchers have developed a new class of optical nanotweezers that can rapidly trap and detect biomolecules, viruses, and DNA. The technology can also use light to detect cancer or improve the production of medications. This image shows plasmonic nanotweezers for the lab-on-a-chip technology and the experimental setup used for excitation of the plasmonic nanostructure and imaging of the motion of suspended tracer particles. Courtesy of Purdue University. The researchers developed a nanostructured plasmonic metafilm by perforating nanoscale holes in a gold film. The...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
