Project DioHELIOS Drives High-Power Laser Diode Advancement for Fusion Plants

SCHRAMBERG, Germany, Nov. 1, 2024 — The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched Project DioHELIOS, part of its Fusion 2040 – Research on the Way to the Fusion Power Plant funding initiative. The three-year joint project, funded with €17.3 million (~$19 million), aims to advance high-power laser diodes for fusion power plants, which the German government expects to be built as early as the 2040s.     A two-electrode device with an anode and a cathode that passes current in only one direction. It may be designed as an electron tube or as a semiconductor device.

    1. The combination of the effects of two or more stimuli in any given sense to form a single sensation. With respect to vision, the perception of continuous illumination formed by the rapid successive presentation of light flashes at a specified rate. 2. The transition of matter from solid to liquid form. 3. With respect to atomic or nuclear fusion, the combination of atomic nuclei, under extreme heat, to form a heavier nucleus.
