Optical Technique Detects Malaria Early

TRIESTE, Italy, April 19, 2012 — Rapid detection of malaria, particularly in remote parts of the world, is not always possible because current methods are slow and require precise instrumentation and highly skilled microscopic analysis. Now, using a technique called secondary speckle sensing microscopy, malaria can be diagnosed with greater accuracy and in as little as 30 minutes. “A new diagnostic tool is urgently needed,” said Dr. Dan Cojoc, a researcher at the Materials Technology Institute of the National Research Council. “With a fast, portable, low-cost and accurate diagnostic tool, physicians...Read full article

    Glossary
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    speckle imaging
A technique for obtaining improved resolution of images produced by large telescopes and distorted by the effects of atmospheric turbulence. Many individual exposures are recorded at high speeds by a low-light-level camera and digitized for computer processing by means of a series of encoded masks.
    speckle pattern
A power intensity pattern produced by the mutual interference of partially coherent beams that are subject to minute temporal and spatial fluctuations.
