Optical Clocks Contribute to Steering International Atomic Time

TOKYO, March 7, 2019 — Optical clocks, which have seen rapid progress in the last 20 years, have evaluated the “one second” tick of International Atomic Time (TAI). The resulting data was provided to the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), which used the data to adjust the TAI tick rate. To maintain the reliability of TAI, BIPM collects data from more than 400 atomic clocks operated around the world. The accuracy of the ticking rate has been maintained by the calibrations provided by frequency standards. While microwave standards have long been in charge of calibrations for adjusting...Read full article

    optical clock
An optical clock is a highly precise and advanced timekeeping device that relies on the oscillations of electromagnetic radiation in the optical or ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional atomic clocks, which use microwave frequencies, optical clocks operate at much higher frequencies, typically involving transitions in atoms or ions at optical wavelengths. Optical clocks have the potential to provide unprecedented accuracy and stability in timekeeping. Key points...
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
