For components testing, the Twyman-Green interferometer weighs in against the Fizeau

Jörg Schwartz, European Correspondent, [email protected]

For the past 100 years or so, makers of optical components have relied on Fizeau interferometers to check surface quality. These devices have allowed manufacturers to detect defects via deviations from regular fringe patterns. However, Fizeau interferometers require very accurate references, which must be tailored for each surface type. Twyman-Green interferometers, however, sidestep this requirement. Not only is the Twyman-Green more flexible, say supporters, but also the need for calibration is no longer relevant. This makes sense for today’s systems, in which electronic processing of...Read full article

    Glossary
    aspheric
Not spherical; an optical element having one or more surfaces that are not spherical. The spherical surface of a lens may be slightly altered so as to reduce spherical aberration. Aspheric surfaces are frequently, but not necessarily, surfaces of revolution about the lens axis.
    beamsplitter
A beamsplitter is an optical device used to divide a beam of light into two or more separate beams, typically by reflecting a portion of the incident light while transmitting the remainder. Beamsplitters are widely used in various optical systems and applications, including microscopy, interferometry, laser systems, and telecommunications. beamsplitter suppliers → Beamsplitters can be classified into different types based on their operating principles and designs: Plate...
    fringe
An interference band such as Newton's ring.
    interferogram
A photographic or electronic recording of an optical interference pattern.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    plane wave
A wave whose surfaces of constant phase are infinite parallel planes normal to the direction of propagation.
    wavefront
A wavefront refers to the continuous surface or boundary representing points in a wave that are in phase, meaning they have the same phase or position in their respective cycles. In simpler terms, it's the front edge of a wave as it propagates through a medium. For example, in a water wave, the wavefront would be the crest of the wave, representing the points where the water's surface reaches its highest elevation. Similarly, in a sound wave, the wavefront would represent the points of...
