Novel Qubits Exhibit Better Defects for Quantum Computing, Telecom

To make a solid-state qubit, a defect must be inserted into the solid material to control the spin states of the electrons. These quantum defects have the potential to enable integration of quantum information systems with conventional electronic devices. However, positioning the defects is challenging, especially when synthetic diamond is used as the solid material for the qubit. Instead of using synthetic diamond, researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) explored the use of sheets of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a family of 2D materials, to make...Read full article

    Glossary
    quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
    spin
Acronym for self-aligned polysilicon interconnect N-channel. A metal-gate process that uses aluminum for the metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) gate electrode as well as for signal and power supply connectors.
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
    nitrogen vacancy
A nitrogen vacancy (NV) refers to a specific type of defect or impurity in a crystal lattice where a nitrogen atom replaces a carbon atom adjacent to a vacancy (an empty lattice site) in the diamond crystal structure. The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is known for its unique optical and spin properties, making it a key player in various applications, particularly in quantum information processing and sensing. Key points about the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center: Formation: The NV center...
