HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 5 -- Researchers have developed an improved method for performing sentinel lymph node biopsy, a crucial first step in determining whether a cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The new method depends on quantum dots, nanometer-sized crystals that emit near-infrared (NIR) light, to illuminate lymph nodes during cancer surgery. The research, resulting from collaboration between researchers at MIT, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital, will be published in the January issue of Nature Biotechnology. The new NIR quantum dots were...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesSilicon-Based NIR Photodiodes Signal an Imaging BreakthroughPhotodiodes, the core component of image sensors, are indispensable in countless applications.
