Molecule’s ’Anatomy’ Imaged

ZURICH, Switzerland, Aug. 31, 2009 -- The "anatomy," or chemical structure, inside a molecule has been imaged with unprecedented resolution through the use of noncontact atomic force microscopy (AFM). Imaging individual atoms within a molecule has been a long-standing goal of surface microscopy. The results by IBM scientists in Zurich push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could greatly impact the field of nanotechnology, which seeks to understand and control some of the smallest objects known to mankind.     nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
