'Molecular Lantern' Discerns Brain Changes at Molecular Level

MADRID, Jan. 8, 2025 — A vibrational spectroscopy technique that uses what its developers are calling a "molecular lantern" aims to enable monitoring of the changes in the brain, at the molecular level, that are caused by cancer and other neurological pathologies in a noninvasive way. The technique, still in experimental stages, uses a probe that is <1 mm thick, with a tip of just 1 µm. Tests on animal models have enabled researchers to analyze any brain structure beyond those that have been already genetically marked or altered and see any molecular change in the brain when there is a pathology. The...Read full article

    Glossary
    vibrational spectroscopy
Vibrational spectroscopy is a type of spectroscopy that involves the study of the vibrational states of molecules. It is used to obtain information about the molecular structure, bonding, and environment by analyzing how molecules interact with electromagnetic radiation, typically in the infrared (IR) or Raman regions of the spectrum. Energy levels: Vibrational spectroscopy probes the vibrational energy levels of molecules. These energy levels correspond to the various ways in which the...
    photometry
Photometry is the branch of science that deals with the measurement of light, particularly in terms of its intensity and the way the human eye perceives it. It involves the quantification of visible light and its characteristics, such as brightness and color. Photometric measurements often consider the spectral sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light and use standardized units to express light intensity. In astronomy, photometry is used to study the brightness of...
