SARATOGA, Calif., July 9, 2010 — The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced approval of an implantable miniature telescope (IMT) made by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies Inc. to improve vision in some patients with end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Surgically implanted in one eye, the device — dubbed the “Implantable Miniature Telescope” (by Dr. Isaac Lipshitz) by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies — is a pea-size telescope that replaces the natural lens and provides an image that has been magnified more than two times. AMD, a condition that mainly affects...Read full article

    retina
The retina is a light-sensitive tissue layer located at the back of the eye, opposite the lens. It plays a crucial role in the process of vision by converting light into neural signals that are sent to the brain for visual recognition. Layers: The retina is composed of several layers of specialized cells, each with distinct functions: Photoreceptor layer: Contains two types of photoreceptor cells — rods and cones — that convert light into electrical signals. Bipolar...
    telescope
