Low-cost SWIR Imager Shows Promise for Machine Vision

A European research group has created a device for upconverting shortwave infrared (SWIR) to visible light. The team’s all-organic SWIR upconversion device consists of a SWIR-sensitive photodetector integrated with a visible light-emitting unit in the form of an OLED display. The organic upconversion device (OUC) directly converts SWIR to visible photons. It could become a low-cost alternative to the inorganic, compound-based SWIR-imaging technologies that are currently available. SWIR light has many uses, from identifying and sorting damaged fruit, to inspecting silicon chips, to...Read full article

    machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
    photodetector
A photodetector, also known as a photosensor or photodiode, is a device that detects and converts light into an electrical signal. Photodetectors are widely used in various applications, ranging from simple light sensing to more complex tasks such as imaging and communication. Key features and principles of photodetectors include: Light sensing: The primary function of a photodetector is to sense or detect light. When photons (particles of light) strike the active area of the photodetector,...
    luminance
Luminous flux emitted from a surface per unit solid angle per unit of area, projected onto a plane normal to the direction of propagation. Also known as brightness and luminous sterance.
