Light Therapy Could Soon Treat Cardiac Arrhythmia

Miniature devices implanted in rodents have been effective for normalizing their heart rates through either electrical or optical stimulation.

IGOR R. EFIMOV, NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, AND PHILIPP GUTRUF, UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world. Sudden cardiac death is triggered by the breakdown of a normal periodic heart rhythm, also known as the sinus rhythm. The emergence of aberrant, high-frequency sources of electrical activity in the heart causes cardiac arrhythmia and results in the failure of the heart to pump blood. While traditional methods, such as ablation and electrical stimulation or defibrillation, can efficiently treat this condition, they are painful and potentially damaging to the healthy myocardium and other tissues. Optogenetics has recently...Read full article

    optogenetics
A discipline that combines optics and genetics to enable the use of light to stimulate and control cells in living tissue, typically neurons, which have been genetically modified to respond to light. Only the cells that have been modified to include light-sensitive proteins will be under control of the light. The ability to selectively target cells gives researchers precise control. Using light to control the excitation, inhibition and signaling pathways of specific cells or groups of...
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
