Light-Activated Gene Expression Could Uncover Cancer Therapies

In a novel approach to light-inducible gene regulation, researchers began by modifying the surface of nanorods to make them more efficient in transporting cancer-killing genes to cells. The gold nanorods, which produce heat when exposed to a NIR laser, were coated with two conventional lipids, oleate and dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DOTAP). The lipids enhanced the nanorods’ ability to interact with and penetrate cells efficiently, while maintaining low cytotoxicity. This is the delivery and activation of genes by gold nanorods. Gold nanorods coated with charged...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optogenetics
A discipline that combines optics and genetics to enable the use of light to stimulate and control cells in living tissue, typically neurons, which have been genetically modified to respond to light. Only the cells that have been modified to include light-sensitive proteins will be under control of the light. The ability to selectively target cells gives researchers precise control. Using light to control the excitation, inhibition and signaling pathways of specific cells or groups of...
