Lensless Camera Uses Fresnel Zone Aperture, Incoherent Illumination to Improve Images

BEIJING, June 1, 2020 — To reduce noise in a thin, lensless camera, researchers at Tsinghua University and MIT built an imaging system with a Fresnel zone aperture (FZA). In addition to introducing a Fresnel optical element into the camera, the researchers used a compressive sensing algorithm to improve the quality of reconstructed images. The FZA was placed 3 mm in front of a CMOS image sensor. The signal recorded by the CMOS sensor was reconstructed by the compressive sensing algorithm with total variation denoising to generate an improved image of the object. Although the Fresnel zone plate could be...Read full article

    holography
Holography is a technique used to capture and reconstruct three-dimensional images using the principles of interference and diffraction of light. Unlike conventional photography, which records only the intensity of light, holography records both the intensity and phase information of light waves scattered from an object. This allows the faithful reproduction of the object's three-dimensional structure, including its depth, shape, and texture. The process of holography typically involves the...
