Lasers Map Hurricane Isaac Flooding

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 5, 2012 — US Geological Survey scientists used a lidar technique called terrestrial lidar over the weekend to map urban flooding caused by Hurricane Isaac. “T-lidar” will enable them to collect highly detailed information in select population areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, where the hurricane had the greatest impact. "If a picture paints a thousands words, a T-lidar scan paints several million words to capture the fleeting aftermath of a hurricane's impact," said USGS director Marcia McNutt. "The ability to rapidly preserve for posterity a quantifiable, three-dimension...Read full article

    laser scanning
Laser scanning is a technology used to create precise digital representations of physical objects or environments by capturing their surface geometry and appearance. It involves directing a laser beam over the object or scene and measuring the distance to points on the surface by analyzing the time it takes for the laser pulses to return to the scanner. The process typically involves the following steps: Laser emission: A laser scanner emits a laser beam directed towards the object or...
    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
