Lasers Form 3-D Nanoparticle Crystals

ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 7, 2011 — Three-dimensional optically induced crystals have been created by manipulating thousands of microscopic plastic spheres trapped by laser-generated electric fields. The technique could someday be used to analyze the structure of materials of biological interest, including bacteria, viruses and proteins. The standard method used to characterize biological molecules such as proteins involves crystallizing them, then analyzing their structure by bombarding the crystals with x-rays, using a technique called x-ray crystallography.
