Laser-Based Method Enables 3D-Printed Glass with Intricate Detail

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 13, 2021 — A laser-powered polymerization process for 3D-printing applications overcomes the need to build a 3D-printed object one layer at a time. A research team from France’s Fresnel Institute and École Centrale de Marseille introduced the method, using it to create miniature models of a bicycle and even the Eiffel Tower from silica glass. The approach is specifically based on multiphoton polymerization, which ensures that the polymerization process, which binds liquid monomer molecules into a polymer solid, occurs only at a precise laser focal point. From the method, users can...Read full article

    Glossary
    polymerization
Process of synthesizing long molecular chain materials (polymers) by reaction of many small molecules (usually thousands) called monomers.
    3d printing
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), is a manufacturing process that builds three-dimensional objects layer by layer from a digital model. This technology allows the creation of complex and customized structures that would be challenging or impossible with traditional manufacturing methods. The process typically involves the following key steps: Digital design: A three-dimensional digital model of the object is created using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This...
