Label-Free Virus Detection Method Integrates Optical Microscope, Fiber

JENA, Germany, Feb. 4, 2016 — A label-free technique has demonstrated the ability to detect freely diffusing viruses smaller than 20 nm. Although existing methods for detecting viruses such as confocal or fluorescence microscopy — which generally involve fixation and fluorescent-dye staining of samples — offer high spatial resolution and high signal-to-background ratios, fluorescence emission lifetime limits the measurement speed, and photobleaching and thermal diffusion limit the duration of measurements. Further, objects smaller than 100 nm often elude conventional characterization methods. ...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
