To honor the contributions made by founder Norman Edmund, optical components manufacturer Edmund Optics has launched the Norman Edmund Inspiration Award. The new award, which consists of an additional $5000 in product donations, will be presented to one of the three 2012 first-place prize recipients of the company’s higher education grant program currently running in the Americas, Asia and Europe. It will be given to the college or university optics program in science, technology, engineering or mathematics that best embodies the legacy of Norman Edmund, who died earlier this year. (See also: Edmund Optics’ Founder Dies) Edmund is the creator and entrepreneurial spirit behind Edmund Scientific, which later evolved into Edmund Optics. He is credited with inspiring many generations of young talent to become interested in science and engineering through his thought-provoking catalog of optics, science instruments and learning tools. “My father had a life-long commitment to motivating and inspiring young people to become involved in science,” said Robert Edmund, CEO of Edmund Optics. “With this award, we are carrying on his desire to excite another generation about innovation and discovery.” The beneficiary of this product award will be determined by the board of directors committee led by member Joan Husted, daughter of Norman Edmund. The winner will be announced Oct. 10. For more information, visit: www.edmundoptics.com
