Imaging the Upshot of Chemo

LOS ANGELES, April 15, 2009 – Oncologists typically must wait months before they can determine whether a treatment is working. Now, using a noninvasive method, researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have shown that they can determine after a single cycle of chemotherapy whether the toxic drugs are killing the cancer or not, allowing doctors to discontinue therapies that are not effective. Using a combination positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scanner, researchers monitored 50 patients undergoing treatment for high-grade soft-tissue sarcomas. The patients were receiving...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    positron emission tomography
A medical imaging device that uses a ring of crystal/photomultiplier tube assemblies encircling the patient to detect gamma rays emitted by positrons colliding with electrons.
